Posted on: 20 January 2015
When your boiler is working, you don't think about it very much. However, boiler repairs can be expensive to fix, and a broken boiler can result in very cold days in your home. That's why it's important to make sure you're doing everything you can to keep your boiler in good shape. Here are some common mistakes you may be making with your boiler.
Surrounding the Boiler with Clutter
Boilers are typically located in closets and rooms where they can get the ventilation they need to function properly. However, many people can't resist the extra space in the room or closet, and fill the boiler room or closet with odds and ends from their home or yard. It is not unusual for people to store clothing, brooms, paint or papers with their boilers.
This can be a mistake. Flammable objects should be nowhere near your boiler, and there needs to be enough ventilation for the boiler to do its job, or it will eventually malfunction. It is also critical that there is enough room for you to be able to get to the boiler right away if there is a problem.
Therefore, make sure to clear your boiler room or closet completely. Make sure that there is nothing touching or surrounding your boiler.
Ignoring Signs of a Problem
Much of the time, people think that noises are normal when they are running the boiler. That is not true. You boiler should be almost silent most of the time. If you are starting to hear groaning and clanking sounds, those are problems that need attention. Signs of a problem also include leaks or cracks on the boiler itself. If you should notice a sign of something that could be a problem, shut down the boiler and call a contractor.
Not Having the Boiler Checked Regularly
Even if you don't notice anything amiss, it is a good idea that your boiler be inspected by a professional about once a year. September and October are good times to have your boiler checked, because you can have any problems found and taken care of before the winter months start to arrive and you use the boiler on a regular basis.
