Finding the perfect gift to give to someone who seems to have everything can be a bit difficult. If you want to ensure that you are able to give someone a gift that you know for sure they do not already own, make one for them. There are many beautiful handmade gifts that you can create to show someone how special they are to you. The following guide will walk you through the process for making a beautiful one-of-a-kind checkerboard for someone.

Gather Your Supplies

The first thing you need to create the checkerboard is a small side table to use for the base of the board. The table needs to have a top that is at least 8"x8" to ensure that you are able to have enough space to make the board. Next, you need to get a bag of quickset mortar, 32 dark colored pieces of 1"x1" tile and 32 light colored pieces of 1"x1" tile.

Arrange the Tiles

Lay the tiles out in front of you to create the pattern that you want to create on the tabletop. Do not place the pieces directly onto the table, you are just creating the layout because you will need to move somewhat quickly to get the tiles in place before the mortar starts to harden. You will have roughly 30 to 40 minutes to complete the project before the mortar will start to harden slightly.

The pattern should consist of eight rows of tiles when you are finished. The first tile in the first row should be dark and then the next tile should be light. Keep placing the tiles in the dark and light pattern until you have eight tiles in the row. When you go to the next row, it should start with a light colored tile, followed by a darker colored one. Continue the process until you have all eight rows laid out with eight tiles per row.

Add the Tiles to the Table

Mix the mortar according to the directions on the bag. Use a trowel to create a thin layer of the mortar and then arrange the tiles according to the pattern that you created. Be sure that the tiles are flush with one another, so that it creates a useable checkerboard when you are finished. Allow the mortar to dry overnight.

When you give the checkerboard to your loved one, be sure to attach twelve decorative stones of one color and twelve decorative stones of another color with the board. The stones will serve as the checker pieces for the game. The table can be used in a living room or on a screened in porch to add a fun and exciting piece of furniture to the area.
